Black & White & Blue

Since returning from Japan exactly one month ago today, I've been so happy to be back in sunny London - I normally get a mean case of the post-holiday blues, but this gorgeous weather's made it so much easier. Here’s to spring temperatures, light evenings, and months of bare legs and going coat-free!

Tambo del Inka & The Sacred Valley

The seventh stop on our jam-packed Peru trip followed two days at Machu Picchu - we left Aguas Calientes and hopped on a glass-roofed vistadome train for two hours of panoramic views of cloudy forests and beautiful mountain scenery, and arrived at the village of Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley.

Devonshire Club

Let me introduce you to your new favourite brunch place...

The Devonshire Club, Liverpool Street, London - UK lifestyle blog

ThDevonshire Club is a stylish new members' club in the heart of the city, spread over five floors across two Grade II-listed buildings in Devonshire Square, just two minutes from Liverpool Street.  It's a beautifully-designed space with co-working offices upstairs, 68 smart hotel rooms and suites, three bars, a library, a restaurant and a gorgeous brasserie overlooking a private garden.  Designed by London-based interior design group March and White, the sophisticated decor has a retro feel, with chic mid-century furniture, red leather booths, patterned upholstery, wingback armchairs, gold lamps, antique mirror panels, and a glossy marble seafood counter.

The menu features modern British and European dishes with fresh shellfish available from the seafood bar.  At the weekends, relaxed bottomless brunches are available with free-flowing bloody Marys, prosecco or champagne - we opted for the latter for an oh-so indulgent Saturday afternoon - alongside classic brunch dishes like eggs, omelettes, bircher muesli, French toast, fresh fruit and full monty English breakfasts.

We ordered the small but perfectly formed eggs royale: smoked salmon and perfectly poached eggs sat on a toasted English muffin and drizzled with a light Hollandaise sauce and chopped chives.  The second savoury dish we shared was a grander affair: an at-table trolley service is available on Saturdays and Sundays - our waiter wheeled a polished silver trolley to our table and sliced tender, perfectly-cooked beef short rib in front of us, served with a pot of truffle macaroni cheese as a side.  Very naughty, but very tasty.  We finished by sharing a bowl of seasonal berries and grapes with natural yoghurt and honey, and one more glass of fizz for the road...  Great food, Instagrammable interiors, friendly service and a relaxed ambience - get yourself to Liverpool Street, pronto.

I haven't been into Oasis in ages, but after browsing the new collection online I added no less than 8 gorgeous dresses to my basket.  Warning: if you don't like polka dots and ditsy floral prints, feminine ruffles and pretty lace, or flattering wrap dresses and tea dresses, look away now.

Okayama Sakura Carnival

I have had the best first 36 hours in Japan.  Admittedly, the late night packing, 11.5 hour flight and 7 hours' sleep across two nights was pretty monstrous - but when we arrived, we fired up on coffee and walked for an absolutely ludicrous 28,000 jetlagged, increasingly weary steps, because: when in Rome.  I've wanted to go to Japan forever, but Japan during cherry blossom season?  You march on through that jetlag...

PF Chang's Asian Table

Leicester Square is a funny part of London - there are plenty of nice places in Covent Garden and Soho, but in between is a bit of a touristy no man's land - however, I was pleasantly surprised to discover new restaurant P.F. Chang's Asian Table last week.

Brasserie Warszawska, Warsaw

I visited Poland for work a few months ago and discovered SO many great restaurants, including Brasserie Warszawska, which serves and the best pierogis in Warsaw.

I came out of a Chopin recital on my second (freezing cold) night there, and stepped inside the warm restaurant with its low golden lighting and traditional banquettes, sitting down at a cosy red leather booth with a glass of champagne.  The decor is smart with black and white floor tiles, yellow walls lined with mirror panels and illustrations in neat frames, high ceilings with those quintessential brasserie fans, classic white tablecloths and a giant vase of fresh flowers on the zinc bar.

Brasserie Waszawska, Poland - lifestyle & restaurant blog

The Michelin Guide restaurant serves classic Polish cuisine alongside modern European dishes, using local ingredients and meat from its own butcher shop.  To start, I had a traditional sour soup with homemade white sausage, quail’s egg and marjoram with sweet onion - it was clearer and herbier than other sour soups I’d tried, but still delicious.  Next, I had an incredible Jerusalem artichoke dish served with truffle mayonnaise and sunflower pesto.  For the third dish, I had the best pierogis I’ve ever had: they weren’t oily or too buttery, tough and overcooked or slimy and undercooked. They were just right, served with thinly-sliced truffle, crispy bacon, an onion consommé and sprinkled with finely chopped chives.  Worth the trip alone.

Next, I had a creamy fois gras parfait with apple and apricot chutney, served with a glass of fruity Piemonte Mature Madeira wine, followed by sea bass with bouillabaisse sauce, mussels, chopped courgette and crispy croutons.  For dessert, I had a crisp chocolate sphere which cracked open to reveal white chocolate and passionfruit to finish a beautiful six course dinner.  Fellow foodies, this is a must when visiting the Polish capital!

Machu Picchu

I have wanted to go to Machu Picchu for as long as I can remember.  It's been very high up my (very long) bucket list, for a very long time, so when we were in Peru last May, there was only one place I wanted to be when I turned 30.

Volt, Berlin

Berlin is one of my favourite cities in the world: it's edgy, modern, creative and inexpensive, with a vibrant arts and thriving gastro scene.  I went twice last year, and a couple of times in 2006/ 2007, and I don't think I've eaten a bad meal there.  In December, after a chilly day outside visiting the Christmas markets, we hopped in an uber and headed southeast to the hipster Kreuzberg district for dinner at Restaurant VOLT.

1970

I've wanted one of Bella Freud's iconic 1970 sweaters for ages.  I've admired them on Alexa ChungKate Moss, Poppy Delevingne and the rest of the British fashion set, and toyed with the idea of the black, red - the two original colours - the baby blue, grey, pastel pink, or festive editions in metallic silver or gold.  My boyfriend put an end to my indecisiveness with an excellent Christmas present: the classic, versatile black version, in the softest fine knit merino.  I love it!

5 Iconic Valentine's Day Gifts

Whether you're single, married or anything in between, get ready for a red and pink explosion from every store window, marketing campaign and advert over the coming two weeks about gifting for that special someone.  I like celebrating everything in the calendar, whether that's having Scottish veal and whisky on Burn's Night (as we did last week at Mac & Wild), getting fried chicken and staying up to watch the Superbowl (this Sunday, folks) or having pancakes on Shrove Tuesday (13 February - mark your diaries!), so I've always celebrated Valentine's Day, either with boyfriends or besties.  If you're exchanging presents this year, I've rounded up the five most iconic Valentine's Day gifts which surely every woman would like to receive...

Last Night of the Proms

One of the cultural highlights of the year for me is the Last Night of the Proms.  I've always watched it on TV, attended my first LNOP in 2015, went to my first Proms in the Park in 2016, and was lucky enough to be there in person at the Royal Albert Hall again last year on 9 September.  Three excellent years on the trot of crowd-pleasing classical favourites, waving flags, rousing national anthems, a joyous orchestra and a slightly raucous crowd.  The BBC Proms is the largest classical music festival in the world, and its famous last night is the perfect celebratory way to bring two months of live concerts to a close.

We were lucky enough to spend a few days in Cusco in Peru last year, and even luckier to call Palacio del Inka home during our time there.  It's a beautiful five star hotel in a 500 year old Incan palace, five minutes walk from the main square in the historic centre.  If you're visiting Cusco, you simply must stay here!

Rozbrat 20, Warsaw

I went to Warsaw for a work trip in October, and decided to go a couple of days early to visit the places I loved when I went in 2013, and discover some new favourites.  One of those was the modern Polish restaurant, Rozbrat 20, where I had a wonderful solo lunch.
