I recently attended a #Zomatomeetup dinner, a series of evenings organised by Zomato with a handful of foodie bloggers to discover some of their new and favourite restaurants. The event was held at Bunnychow in Soho, a little corner place serving South African "bunnies" which are essentially different curries served in hollowed out bread. They might not sound like much, but they're delicious.
The dish originates from Indian farm workers in the 1940s in Derben, South Africa who used to take curry for lunch in a roti wrap which would get messy, so they came up with the 'edible lunchbox' idea by putting curry in a loaf.
Bunnychow hit the London restaurant scene in 2013 with a truck serving up street food at festivals and in Brixton before opening a Boxpark pop-up then their new permanent address on Wardour Street in September 2014.
We were joined by co-founder Lyndsay Anderson for drinks before we headed down to the kitchen to make our own, from blending the vegetables to pulling the pork and hollowing out the crusty artisan bread loaves. We then filled them to the brim with beef, pork, chicken or vegetarian curry and topped with mixed cabbage coleslaw.
We shared naughty but oh so nice pork scratchings and biltong to start and then sampled all the sides: sambal salad, piri piri pork ribs, chicken wings, bobottie meatballs and a corn risotto, then tried the creamy bread and butter pudding for dessert. Each bunnychow is only £5 so it's great value for money as a quick and easy lunch, casual dinner or stop on a night out.
