24 January 2012

One of my favourite nights out in London last year was The Blitz Party in an underground bunker complete with bars made of sandbags, ration card cocktail menus and boys and girls dressed up to the nines in vintage 40s clothing.

Everyone looked absolutely super.  The odd person let the side down with poor efforts or naff replica outfits but the majority of men looked slick and dapper, smartly dressed in legitimate wartime marine or army uniforms and retro three-piece tailored suits.

The women looked resplendent in ladylike gloves, ditsy tea dresses, antique jewellery, military skirt suits, swept glamour curls, floral blouses tucked into calf-length wiggle skirts, seamed nylon stocking suspenders with the standard red lipstick and winged eyeliner.  And everyone was wearing some sort of hat be it a tweed flat cap, smart trilby, veiled fascinator, military cap, velvet pillbox, woollen beret or baker boy...

The entertainment comes in the form of live music and cabaret acts; when we went the whole room was swing dancing (especially as the night went on and plenty of gin cocktails went down) to the loud, live, swinging big band.

If you want to step back in time and revel in the 40s wartime spirit (who doesn't?) with a fun bunch of retronauts you better be quick as the events sell out fast.  If you're lucky enough to have a ticket for the next Blitz Party event this Saturday 28, then you're going to have a whale of a time...  If not, I'll see you at the next one!
