FANTASIE, HUIT AND B.TEMPT'D BY WACOAL LINGERIE

30 June 2014

I recently attended a press day presenting some of the biggest lingerie and swimwear brands' collections for Autumn/ Winter 2014, including Fantasie, Huit, Elomi, Wacoal and Freya (which I've been loving since, as I came away with a gorgeous azure blue set after getting properly fitted).  This orange floral print cut out halterneck swimsuit from French brand Huit was one of my favourites.

MAY INSTAGRAM PHOTOS

25 June 2014

In May it was my birthday; we went to Ronnie Scott's for a wicked night of jazz to watch the super-energetic James Carter Trio, visited the Canary Islands for the first time, staying in Tenerife for five days for poolside lounging at a nice hotel and cycling (three quarters of the way) up a volcano, I went to the first surge of AW14 press days, did the Norwich Cycle Swarm and cycled around Norfolk and watched the temperatures in Blighty soar. Great month!

BRASSERIE LIPP

24 June 2014

Brasserie Lipp is somewhat of a Parisian institution.  On the Boulevard Saint-Germain opposite Cafe Flore (another much-loved famous Paris establishment), the old school restaurant has been serving up good, classic French food since it opened its doors in 1926 and has served Proust, Hemingway, Camus, Jean Genet and Simone Signoret and numerous artists, intellectuals and politicans over the years.

CASE STUDY HOUSE #21

19 June 2014

Architect Pierre Koenig's mid-century Case Study House #21, also know as the Bailey House, sat in the Hollywood Hills off Laurel Canyon, was completed in 1958 as part of a series of homes built in California, sponsored by Arts & Architecture magazine and designed to promote new ideas of modern living in post-war America.

Pierre Koening's Case Study House #21 mid-century architecture

Many of these houses were photographed by Julius Shulman and #21 appears in of his best know images. In the picture, a woman in a blue dress sits on a sofa while her companion looks on from behind, perhaps about to play an LP or fix a drink. For all the glamorous Mad Men swank, however, the house itself is modest in scale, about 1,3350 sq ft, and, with its steel beams, corrugated steel roof and linear water elements, simple, industrial and rigorous in execution.

ENGLISH ROSE GARDEN

18 June 2014

Last weekend I spent a lovely evening in the rose garden of one of the parks by London Bridge - my old stomping ground for six years before I moved to Paris, and still one of my favourite areas of London.  I've watched the gentrification of Bermondsey Street with delight since I moved there in 2007, from my first night  in the neighbourhood sitting in The Garrison to use their wifi, to watching restaurants like Jose, Zucca and Antico pop up, countless drinks in my old local Village East, playing tennis and having dozens of picnics in the park, numerous brunches in Borough Market, the annual dog show, watching a lot of the Olympics on the huge screens next to Tower Bridge, dining in the restaurants along the Southbank and at the wonderful Tapas Brindisa, watching The Shard sprout up from the ground, staring at the skyline from the roof of my old apartment...  I may have moved north of the river, but I still have plenty of love for SE1.

Beautiful English rose garden

My brother and sister-in-law still live in the area and my Daddy was visiting for the weekend so we all spent a couple of hours at dusk playing boules, frisbee and throwing a ball around with a couple of bottles of wine until it got dark.  It was one of those warm, balmy summer evenings I know I'll be thinking of in winter.

BIRTHDAY OUTFIT

17 June 2014

For my birthday last month I went for lunch with my best friend at Newman Street Tavern (I hadn't been before, but would recommend it - good British food and rustic country pub-style interiors) and spent the evening listening to jazz at one of my favourite places in London, Ronnie Scott's.  We drank Champagne and ate dinner whilst American saxophonist James Carter played with his super-energetic James Carter Organ Trio band, who were awesome.

KAREN MILLEN SALE

I've been keeping my eye on the Karen Millen sale going live as I want those black patent brogues...  Sadly they're not on offer (yet) but there are plenty of other goodies from the British fashion brand in their summer sale, which launched today.  Here are some of my favourites I hope won't have sold out by payday!

VINTAGE WORLD CUP POSTERS

12 June 2014

Today's the big day!  World Cup fever has taken over and the next month will be spent in front of a screen, going through the lows, highs, lows and more lows which usually go hand-in-hand with supporting England.  But hey, miracles can happen.  Let's hope Roy's boys can at least go further than 2010...  I'm a sucker for vintage posters and typography, so here's a timely selection of some great 20th century World Cup posters.

KATY PERRY AND MADONNA

11 June 2014

Bit late to the party on this one, as the issue came out when I was on holiday, but I love the Bettie Page-inspired cover shoot from V magazine for the June 2014 issue with two of the music industries biggest stars.

BLUEBELL WOODS

9 June 2014

I went up to Yorkshire in April and visited the beautiful bluebell woods in Ilkley, wearing a new purple floral Paul by Paul Smith dress on one of the first days of the year we didn't need to wear a coat.  A vivid bluebell carpet is a sight to behold and one of my favourite things about spring.

As much as I love living in central London, it's nice to escape the city and be surrounded by nature to feel more in touch with the seasons than you do in the capital.  Fresh air, bright spring blooms and countryside walks are the perfect weekend antidote to a week in the office.

WAKE UP WITH KNEIPP

5 June 2014

German bath and bodycare brand Kneipp has been making natural and organic products since 1891.  The products range from herbal bath salts to essential oil soaks and two new fruity flavours have been added to its body washes.

Kneipp natural body washes

The zesty Enjoy Life Body Wash made with natural may chang and mood-enhancing lemon essential oils is a great way to start the day and the Cheerful Mind Body Wash, made with passion fruit and grapefruit oils, awakens the senses during morning showers.

The unique soap-free formula (when combined with water, each product releases essential oils) is gently cleansing, leaving skin moisturised and lightly scented.  They smell delicious, but the best thing is that there are no nasties in them: made with plant-derived active ingredients, they're dermatologically tested, pH balanced, alkaline free with no preservatives, parabens, paraffin or silicone.  Just the good stuff.

SPACE AGE SUNGLASSES

4 June 2014

In April I attended a cocktail party at the MATCHESFASHION.COM townhouse in Marylebone for Silhouette's relaunched line of Futura sunglasses. The iconic sunglass style was relaunched this year as Silhouette celebrates its 50th anniversary.  The original model was first available in 1974, when glasses poster boy Elton John wore them at a stadium concert, they were worn on magazine and album covers, sent down the catwalk and even 70s Barbie had a mini version of the Futura sunnies.

PASTEL PINK LADY

3 June 2014

There's some serious tonal dressing going on in this editorial for the March 2012 issue of Nylon magazine. Dutch model Quinta Witzel wears ladylike pieces in head-to-toe spring pastels throughout the shoot, with a different colour each look, photographed by Justin Hollar, styled by James Rosenthal, peachy pink hair by Christopher Harper and feminine make-up by Natasha Smee.

DAISY DARCHE

1 June 2014

Daisy Darche is a family-run luxury British womenswear brand by Alex Darche, a print designer who graduated from Royal College of Art before she launched her label in 2009.  The products are designed and made in London, from production in Alex's mother's atelier to printing at her father's digital printing company; not only does it have the celebrated 'Made in Britain' tag, but this is a full on family affair - how nice is that?
