LAYERING UP FOR THE WINTER

LAYERING UP FOR THE WINTER

Winter is coming, (anyone else a massive Game of Thrones fan? I can't wait for season three to start next year!) which means mulled wine, crackling fires, Christmas trees, carols and sugar plums.  Oh, I'm such a big kid... With chilly months just around the corner, it's also time to start shopping for the perfect winter look.

Cold weather can be a challenge; piling on coats, scarves and bulky layers can make outfits look frumpy so you need to spend a little more time planning your winter wardrobe to keep it chic and flattering.

I get tired of wearing the same old winter coat so like to brighten it up with a bright, jewel-toned scarf, bright leather handbag or, as it rains in England pretty much non-stop from October to February, take inspiration from Carrie with a bright umbrella for a cheerful pop of colour during cold, dark days.

Weekend dressing calls for relaxed outfits perfect for when you've just rolled out of bed and need to grab a latte; slip into long leggings - comfortable yet still presentable in smart neutral colours - or jazzy trousers like these metallic Slim Leg Trousers from Chalayan in this season's burgundy, add a graphic sweater on top and pair with long boots to elongate your silhouette.

Cold weather doesn’t necessarily have to mean the end to high hemlines; mix it up for a night out by pairing your favourite skirts and dresses with thick ribbed tights, as seen at Burberry, for a cool contrast in fabrics.  Just add heels to ensure you stay away from sensible schoolgirl/ nun territory.

It's best to keep outerwear neutral and versatile so it matches all the colours in your wardrobe.  I'm in the market for a black/ grey/ blue long coat which is sleek and formal enough for work and dressy enough for parties.

I spy with my little eye some rather nice party coats by Pringle of Scotland knitwear at Avenue 32. I might have to start saving for that Dark Grey Cashmere Coat I first saw at the AW12 press day to wear with my brightest shoes and flushed pink cheeks.

To get ideas for great winter outfits, head over to online retailer Avenue 32 for some inspiration and remember that you shouldn't have to sacrifice style for warmth!
