LONDONERS AT PLAY

LONDONERS AT PLAY

Car-ni-val! It's here, once again. I'm off to spend the day over in West London, but before I go here's a great photograph of Notting Hill Carnival frolicking I saw at a private view at the Getty Gallery's Londoners at Play exhibition earlier this week.

To celebrate a massively historic summer for London, Getty Gallery's retrospective exhibition reveals how Londoners spent their leisure time from the late 1800s to the modern day, through a collection of superb archival imagery.

57 photographs profile music lovers, sports fanatics, theatre-goers and office workers from the late 1800s to the present day, including men playing cricket in the City during wartime lunch breaks, colleagues ice skating on the frozen ponds during the ferocious winter of 1947 (below) and joyous crowds at fun fairs on Hampstead Heath in 1926.

The exhibition offers the public a rare glimpse into the day to day life of Londoners of decades past and runs until 1 September.  I heartily recommend a visit.
