GODRUN SJODEN IN THE UK

31 March 2012

Swedish interiors brand Gudrun Sjödén opened its first UK store this week.  I went to the launch event on Thursday night in Covent Garden to take a look at the latest collections.  Ever since spending a large portion of my pocket money in IKEA as a child, I’ve had somewhat of a fixation with minimal, Scandi interior design.  Having spent last weekend in Stockholm, the situation has worsened…

FRIDAY'S FFFFOUND

30 March 2012

After seeing all the interesting letters in Sweden last weekend, I think that the English language needs jazzing up with some diacratic characters and diphthong vowels...

No wonder wedges are so popular in Stockholm, all those cobbles and grit knacker heels!  These blue patterned Florence Wedges by Swedish shoe brand Vagabond served me well as I walked around all weekend in them and they're super-comfortable.

Patterned fabric wedge shoes from Vagabond. Rounded toe. Made from textiles with a leather insole and rubber outsole.  8cm heel and 2cm platform.

ZOE LEE

22 March 2012

One of the best discoveries of LFW was the latest kid on the luxury shoe label block, Zoe Lee.  The British designer learnt her craft with shoe king Manolo Blahnik and started at Vivienne Westwood 8 years ago, before launching her own footwear line.

JEWELLERY FOR THE UNRULY

19 March 2012

It's officially the first day of spring – and what does spring called for?  Things with rabbits on, obviouslyThere’s a pattern forming here

Another piece of jewellery Me & Zena sent me is this sweet Bright Eyes Rabbit Ring, which I’m wearing today and has received no less than four compliments already.  He certainly is a cheerful little chap.

Bright Eyes outshines probably every bunny gone before; Rodger, Bugs et al. From the top of his pointy ears right down to his cute little face we know you'll fall madly in love just like we have.  Available in gold toned with green eyes and silver toned with blue eyes.

Stacked in a Spray Flowers Teacup from Cath Kidston with dozens of other sparkly rings.

Yours,
Mrs Magpie

UNIQLO X LAURA ASHLEY

18 March 2012

UNIQLO has teamed up with Laura Ashley to launch a limited collection of contemporary designed pieces using the British brand's archive prints.

I went to an event in January to celebrate the collaboration at the Fashion and Textile Museum on Bermondsey Street and met Jane Ashley whose photography (above) has been used in the brand's advertising campaigns in the 1970s/1980s.

The women's UT collection celebrates Laura Ashley's rich design heritage and traditional values of quality and includes tees, stoles and tunics adorned in ditsy floral patterns.

I was given a voucher to choose a piece from the collection and opted for this very wearable black crew neck short sleeve t-shirt (£14.90) decorated with sprigs of purple and green flowers.

Also check out the UNIQLO x Orla Kiely collaboration, which hits stores this week.

HAPPY ST PATRICK'S DAY

KAT MACONIE

16 March 2012

Today I'm wearing these crystal-embellished black and pewter platform sandals which I purchased from THE OUTNET in their mega 80% off clearance.

I first came across Kat Maconie two years ago and I don't know what it is about her designs, but they rocketed up my New Favourite Shoes list.  I finally gave in and these are my very first pair of her shoes...

EXCLUSIVE TO THE OUTNET.COM: black and pewter leather, 4.5 inch heel with 0.5 inch partially concealed platform, crystal stud embellishments, cutouts, peep-toe. Exposed zip fastening at back of heel.

I like her distinctive shapes and chunky heel - maybe it's because I'm always running around but I'd choose a sturdier heel over a spindly Nicholas Kirkwood stiletto point any day.

I do love Nicholas Kirkwood, although I went to a sample sale recently and even though the prices were £30-£150 from £400-£900, I still didn't love any style enough to splurge (admittedly, this was just before Christmas and my purse was like a barren wasteland, complete with tumbleweed).

Brian Atwood's designs are great and of course everyone loves Christian Louboutin (although they're so... obvious. After years of being everyone's go-to brand for high-end shoes, aren't his red soles becoming a bit passé? But I still want these...)

So, yeah - I think my New Favourite Shoe Designer is indeed Kat Maconie. If the amount of times I've glanced down at my new shoes is anything to go by, I'm really rather smitten...

FELDER FELDER

15 March 2012

After the Maria Grachvogel show on day 1 of London Fashion Week I went to the Felder Felder show, which was also one of my favourites. (How many am I allowed to have?)

THE WHITE COMPANY MOTHER'S DAY GIFTS

14 March 2012

The White Company is just so... lovely.  And their mother's day gift ideas are suitably lovely too - here are my favourites just in time for Sunday 18 March.

Handmade from glass with a hand-antiqued, silvered finish that beautifully reflects light and adds extra sparkle to any room. Mix and match this eclectic collection to create a look of vintage treasures collected over time.

Bedtime just can't come soon enough when there's a pair of these heavenly bed socks waiting to keep out the chill. In exquisitely soft pure cashmere, they're a real treat for your feet.

For medium/small flowers such as freesias and spray carnations, choose this convex vase shape. It is also perfect for blooms prone to droop such as hyacinths, peonies, tulips, gerberas and hydrangeas, as the thick, heavy glass counter balances the heavy heads.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SASKIA

Happy Birthday to my gorgeous BFF Saskia, with whom I went to the Blitz Party on Saturday night and oh I say, what a jolly good time we bloody well had.  I was wearing my one and only vintage 1940s dress again, which I brought out of my wardrobe for the first time since I wore it to the Blitz Party last year.

Blitz Party March 2012

It really is such good fun.  Next, I'm going to the Belle Epoque and Prohibition events.  And I'm definitely allowed to buy vintage outfits for those two parties as I don't have many 1900s and 1920s pieces in my wardrobe... Yet.

NATURE’S WONDER MOISTURISER

13 March 2012

My lips are currently loving Lanolips (almost a tongue-twister…)

The multi award-winning cosmetics brand sent me the Lip Ointment with Colour SPF 15 (£8.16) product to try – I like to think of myself as somewhat of a chapstick connoisseur, as I always have several on the go at my desk/ in my bag/ by my bed so over the years must’ve tried dozens of brands – and Lanolips is good.

It’s dubbed the purest lip care on earth due to the 100% natural ingredients, or rather ‘ingredient’ as there’s pretty much only one: lanolin.  Featured in all products, this stuff is the real deal; used to heal wounds and in hospitals, Lanolips is the first and only 100% ULTRA Medical Grade beauty product.  Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Carmex

Lanolin is a natural product extracted from the wool fleece of shorn sheep and is able to hold 200% of its weight in water, making it the ultimate natural moisturiser. It’s also hypoallergenic, without additives, colourless, odourless, impurity cleaned and specially refined to a creamy state.  The fancy refining process leaves it the best quality possible and costs 14 times more than basic lanolin to produce.

The Lip Ointment also includes sweet almond oil, shea butter, beeswax, Vitamin E and SPF 15 to hydrate and protect dry skin and lips with a glossy, non-sticky coverage.  Available in Rhubarb, Rose, Apples, Sunshine and Dark Honey.

MONKI STORE LAUNCH PARTY

10 March 2012

On Thursday night I went to the launch party for the new Monki store on Carnaby Street, to check out their latest collection whilst drinking vodka martinis, getting made up in spangly false lashes and glittery lipstick and dancing to childhood hits from the 90s. My kind of evening...

I'd browsed the website a few times before, but after seeing their spring/summer line in the flesh, I'm sure it's going to become my new favourite high street brand; Scandinavian design + Urban Outfitters style meets Forever 21 prices.

What's Swedish for "bingo"?

trying on the Rosa Hat

I loved the draped keyhole back and shoulder pads adding detail to a simple t-shirt shape of the silver Violetta Dress (and the patterned design too), the wearability of the casual, clashing triple denim Emilie Shirt and the Tallulah Dress in all its bright floral patterned glory.  Perfect for my wardrobe summer!

See you next week, Monki - I'm coming back...

TED BAKER THUJA JELLY SHOES

8 March 2012

Some of the Vivienne Westwood for Melissa rubber shoe shapes are just weird (who wants an Edwardian plastic buckle and curved heel, exactly?) so I’m pleased to see a more wearable version on the high street.

Ted's scented Sweet Feet pumps come with a contrast colour bow and metallic plaque with Ted Baker engraved branding.

The best thing?  They’re watermelon scented.  Goodness knows why, but I suppose why not - I haven't worn jelly shoes since I was about eight and I know my eight year old self would have been delighted with that unnecessary little fruity touch. Ted Baker’s summery Bow Ballerina Pumps come in Deep Pink/ RedBlack/ CreamOrange/ Red and Natural/ Black.

MARIA GRACHVOGEL

7 March 2012

Here's my first London Fashion Week post, which is many days late but LFW - and indeed all fashion weeks - are known for tardiness, so at least it's in keeping...  My first show of the season was Maria Grachvogel.  Oh wonderful, ladylike Maria Grachvogel.

Held in the grand, gilt gold Lancaster Ballroom at The Savoy, the British designer's AW12 collection harked back to the glamorous 1930s jazz age.  Hair was slicked back in side partings, lips were dark and bold and thick wool tweed materials contrasted against shimmery opulent fabrics with product names like Speakeasy/ Charleston/ Buster/ Chaplin/ Capone/ Ellington/ Gershwin.

BAGLIONI SPA

6 March 2012

This weekend I spent a very relaxing Saturday afternoon with some hot stones at the sleek SPC Spa, located in the luxury 5 star Baglioni Hotel opposite Hyde Park in London. We were met by our therapists Emily and Annabel (I booked joint sessions in the couples treatment room), who offered herbal teas, gave us big soft white bathrobes then led us into the aromatic steam room for a little pre-treatment relaxation.

MY FAVOURITE PFW DRESS

5 March 2012

Courtesy of Stella McCartney's AW12 catwalk show and as seen on Karlie Kloss; a structured shape and ladylike midi length in electric, cobalt blue and monochrome patterned detailing.  Absolutely beautiful and my favourite Stella piece yet.  Shop Stella McCartney's current SS12 collection.

LIPSY SS12 PRESS DAY

4 March 2012

Last month I went to the Lipsy spring/ summer 2012 press day and fell in love with some of the sugary sweet confections on show.

delicate floral cut-out detailing

Although it isn't one of my favourite labels, I was keen to see what the Lipsy designers have come up with for summer because if there's one thing this high street brand knows, it's party dresses.  And there were rails of them...

pretty mint green

white or pink?

Lipsy sometimes delivers tacky and tarty, but this season has channelled catwalk trends into an inexpensive, stylish collection.

Sequined patterns, vibrant Miami colours, girly pleated chiffon, tropical prints, Valentino-inspired pastel lace, Versus-style studs and underwater designs inspired by Versace and Chanel adorn glitzy, flirty, summery party dresses perfect for poolside lounging and garden parties.

PIXI GLOW LAUNCH

Earlier this week I went to the launch of the new PixiGlow make up collection at Pixi's flagship store in Soho.

In partnership with Disney and inspired by Tinker Bell, the range includes vintage-inspired, soft colours sprinkled with sparkles in illuminating palettes, twinkly shades and tint blushes in pretty mint green packaging inspired by pistachio macaroons.

I was given the whole PixiGlow collection to try and I already love the neon, highlighter shade of the PixiGlow Tinker Bell Nail Polish (£8).  Can't wait to try the rest!
