PHILADELPHIA

This time last year I was in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for the first time. My boyfriend spent a year at UPenn, so he showed me round when we were over in New York for Christmas and here are a few very belated photos of our great trip there.

PUFF DADDY

I'm been staying dry and keeping it real in my new quilted down jacket from Italian outerwear label Duvetica.  My first puffer jacket is sporty and stylish in equal measures, made from seriously lightweight, seriously shiny polyamide, filled with pure goose down and comes with a detachable raccoon fur trim hood.

Good for the slopes, good for cold winters and good because it reminds me of the 90s high shine sports jackets in this Mase video.

PRETTY BALLERINAS

The Boxing Day sales are here and some flat shoes are needed. I've chosen girly Pretty Ballerinas pumps in sparkly black glitter with a round toe and little bow.  Ahh...

The Spanish brand has been manufacturing ethically-sourced, handmade chic shoes since 1918, making classic ballet flats in every colour, print, pattern and style under the sun. If you don't own a pair, you must - they're so comfortable once you do, you won't go back.

CHRISTMAS IN NEW YORK

Last Christmasgave you my heart was in NYC for a week of festive fun; we went ice skating in Central Park, went to Madison Square Garden (a first for me) to see the  New York derby ice hockey match, Rangers vs Islanders (which brought back memories of playing NHL with my bro on the N64), manic sale shopping at Macy's, saw all the beautiful Christmas window displays and made a trip to Philadelphia to explore a new city.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY

My Mama recently sent me this excellent photo of a Christmas Day in the nineties (I'm guessing... 1992?) from the family albums archive.

Things to note:
1. I've always liked dressing in black and white (it never goes out of style: I'm pretty sure I'd wear that dress now).  And polka dots.  And black and white polka dots!  In fact this is one of the few family photos in which my childhood sartorial failures haven't been documented (most of them involve shiny lilac tracksuits).
2. Big hair definitely runs in the family.  Both my parents bordered on afro territory 1970-90s.
3. Ten style points to my Dad for the Budweiser braces.  No, make that twenty.
4. This is factual evidence that my big brother has always been a buffoon.  He still ruins perfectly good photographs with awkward poses or, his current favourite (at 30), crying faces.
5. I'm going to insist that my husband wears a bowtie.  Keep it classy on Christmas Day, none of that slobbing around in pyjamas stuff, that's what Boxing Day is for...

Merry Christmas one and all, let the Champagne flow Xx

SEQUIN SEASON

The Christmas season is here and that means sequins should be worn everyday, even to the office.  Today I'm wearing this black cotton tee with OTT bronze sequined embellishment.  Sparkle sparkle.

HOUSE OF HARLOW 1960

Everyone loves a bit of Nicole Richie's laidback LA style, but I'm not a big fan of her House of Harlow 1960 label. I'm always dubious about celebrities launching fashion lines, but I'm prepared to eat my words as these metallic embellished slippers are great.

Zenith Beaded Flats from House of Harlow 1960 | UK fashion blog

The rock chic Zenith Beaded Flats are made from soft leather and decorated with black, white and gold beads in a geometric pattern finished with embroidered skulls.  Comfortable, pretty pumps with skulls on - what more could you want from a pair of shoes?

STYLISH CHRISTMAS JUMPERS

There's an excellent selection of stylish Christmas jumpers (now there's an oxymoron) and festive knitwear out there at the moment.  Here are my favourites, from L-R: Knitted Dogtooth Ski Jumper from TopshopBah Humbug Jumper by ZoeKarssen exclusive to Net-A-Porter, Black Snowman Knit Bobble Jumper from New Look and Reindeer Fairisle Print Jumper from ASOS.

Also-rans include this ASOS Christmas Pattern Jumper, ASOS Metallic Patterned Christmas Jumper, J.Crew's Fair Isle Ski Knit, and Ho! Ho! Ho! Jumper by Lot78 at Net-A-Porter.

SPORTS BAGS

Along with approximately 100% of the country, I'm already starting to make promises to myself to kickstart my fitness regime in 2013.  New year's resolutions rarely last, but I do plan to start running again. I used to run races and half marathons fairly regularly but had back problems (ahem, bad shoes) which my sports massage guy seems to have fixed.

So I'm going back to pounding the pavement in January, with one of these stylish Adidas bags for company...  I chose the pink one for me and the black one for my boyfriend.  Matchy matchy.

SKIN DEEP

Christmas party season is starting to take its toll.  Whenever I feel worn out or stressed, it shows on my skin which feels dull and tired at the moment, so I plan to head to a salon pronto and emerge with a refreshed complexion.

Understated nude meets glitzy glitter in Ravel's Kingdom Court shoes.  The black suede and glitter heels are pretty snazzy too but I prefer the pewter and silver toe cap version.  The comfortable platform and sturdy block heel are box-tickers too.

A team of the country's finest aromatherapy and perfume experts have come together to create (and produce in the UK) three ranges, using 99% natural ingredients and the finest blends of essential oils to invigorate, energise and uplift.

BAGS OF STYLE

These McQ by Alexander McQueen shoppers are speaking to me.  I like the neat, simple shape, the adjustable buckle strap and they're tall so I imagine can house quite a lot (for those kitchen sink days).

But which one: red tartanpatent blackquilted black or this season's deep bordeaux?

I'm swaying towards the preppy Clueless plaid version as the late British designer was an Anglophile and when I think of tartan print, I think of Vivienne Westwood and Lee McQueen.  And these bags are cheaper, less common alternative to Viv's...

MOUSE FLATS

Marc Jacobs' ubiquitous mouse flats from his Marc by Marc Jacobs line are on my Christmas wishlist.  There, I admitted it.  They've been around forever and everyone has them but I don't care - I really want to look down at my feet and see these cheerful little mice shoes looking up at me.

They come in several different styles, but my favourite is the black and gold version made from buttery soft black leather and gold studs, because they go with everything and of course I need another pair of black flats.

MATCHES SS13 PRESS DAY

I fell in love with a number of things at the recent Matches Spring/ Summer 2013 press day.

I think my favourite item was this beaded, geometric print peplum top from Peter Pilotto, which nods towards sports luxe with its mesh insert and collar trim, looks a bit futuristic with the sheer, sheeny fabrics whilst the beading adds a feminine, decorative edge.

MISSONI ZIGZAG LOAFERS

I recently attended a Q&A event at Soho House at which Angela Missoni discussed her family business, how her parents met at the Olympics in London and future plans for the Italian label in its 60th anniversary year.

I don't have any Missoni clothes or shoes in my wardrobe yet, but I've got my beady little shoe-obsessed eye on these leather and zigzag print loafers from the 2013 resort collection, featuring the label's ever present zigzag pattern, decorated with pink polka dots.

MODERN TRADITIONAL BROGUES

I've loved striking menswear-inspired clothing and accessories ever since seeing Bugsy Malone when I was a kid and I've loved a good pair of shoes since I can remember; put the two together and you get, uh oh...

These killer McQ by Alexander McQueen ivory and black leather shoe boots with traditional brogue detailing are right up my street.  Made from genuine leather with tassel detail, gold hardware, adjustable buckle, almond toe and stacking up at an almighty 5 inches in height, these bad boys look like they mean business...

POWER TO GENERATION M

One of the best things about the blogosphere is the daily insight into people's style, tastes and lives (which magazines just can't offer!) and developing your own sources for style inspiration.

Andy Torres from Style Scrapbook, a Mexican fashionista in her twenties living in Amsterdam who racks up serious airmails from her fashion adventures, is one of my favourites. A gorgeous, tall, leggy brunette with great style, an eclectic wardrobe and good, clear photography, she's been in my blog roll for years and I always like reading about her new projects.

To celebrate the new EOS M camera, Canon teamed up with five talents (the new ‘Generation M’) for their modern take on a traditional photographic style. Andy followed a brief to reinterpret traditional still life photography, bringing it right up to date by marrying it with her love for fashion.

Last night we had our Christmas house party. One of my flatmates is American so goes back to the States midway through December so, like last year, we decided to throw a premature little soiree, in November.  The last day of November, but still nice and early November...

WINTER WARMERS FROM WHITTARDS

Whittard of Chelsea, the don of the coffee and tea world since 1886, sent me some Luxury Hot Chocolate to try, so I conducted a taste test on a chilly December morning with two chocaholics and pleasing results!

I served it with hot, frothy milk and sprinkled chocolate on the top for an extremely indulgent alternative to mid-morning coffees.  It's creamy, rich (but not too sugary) and tastes even better if you've just come in from the cold outside...  The Breakfast Ground Coffee and English Breakfast Tea also come in pretty, decorative festive canisters too.

The gifts under £15 make perfect stocking fillers and the Christmas hampers are great for presents too.  Check the Christmas Gift Shop and save 20% off with code PUDDING before midnight 12/12/12! (Visit whittards.co.uk for T&Cs.)

SISLEY HANDBAGS

Sisley was born in Paris in 1968, starting with a denim collection and growing to produce men's and women's clothing and accessories.  Huge in its native France and owned by the massive Benetton Group, Sisley often goes under my radar as a perfectly nice brand which perhaps lacks innovation or a distinct style direction, but the collections are going from strength to strength lately; especially the accessories.

snakeskin Coralie Bowling Bag, black Demix Small Bugatti Bag, yellowy green Zenia Bag and quilted grey Small Emmie Shopping Bag

These four everyday handbags caught my eye, from the neutral taupe and versatile black to the yellow and tan bag perfect for brightening up outfits in spring...  When it comes.

BLUE VELVET

It's too cold for pumps, loafers or any shoes with a thin sole through which you can feel the icy pavement.  The winter months call for ankle boots (or wedged trainers. Must. Stop. Wearing...) and I'm smitten with my latest pair.

I make no secret of my love for English shoe designer Kat Maconie and there are always a couple of her pairs of shoes in my most wanted list and now I can cross these off. The blue velvet Camilla Boots feature a chunky gold tone side zip, soft leather lining, almond shaped toe and her signature block heel.
