FRIDAY'S FFFFOUND: ITALY

23 September 2011

After a hectic summer, a much-deserved (if I do say so myself) belated holiday is in order.  Today I am out the do' and heading to Aix-en-Provence, Sanremo, Porto Maurizio, Imperia, Cinque Terre, Lestre Sevanti, Portofino and Rapallo for ten days with my 70.3 Ironman. See you in October!

LFW Highlight: Basso & Brooke Spring/Summer 2012

22 September 2011

My highlight from the whole of London Fashion Week has to be Basso & Brooke (like it has been many times before).

Wow colour and digital print immediately spring to mind with Basso & Brooke and the designer duo certainly didn’t disappoint in their spring/summer 2012 show on Friday.

Bruno Basso was inspired by the relentless Siberian darkness and bleak landscape when he travelled from London to Beijing by car to create designs with hard, angular lines in sharp contrast with the mouthwatering bright colours the graphic designer imagined in his native Brazil.

The collection features the yellows and oranges of sunny mornings, greys and plums of dusk and deep purples and midnight blues of twilight, continuing the theme of journeys by representing the different stages of day.

These clashing influences came together in a riot of eye-popping shades of tropical brights, mixed with paint splatters and jagged bold colour blocks on glossy, draped satin-jersey dresses with necklines dropping to a sexy deep V at the back and twisted pleats at the front.

Feminine silhouettes with daring, eye-catching, colourful prints in wearable fabrics? Oh hell yes.  (I loved the Borba for Basso & Brooke jewellery too, in particular the chunky plastic necklaces.)  Thumbs up.

Urban Renaissance exhibition

21 September 2011

Earlier this month I went to the exhibition opening of a fashion and photography collaboration called 'Urban Renaissance' from two up and coming Baltic artists; designer Sarmite Ostanevica and photographer Aiga Redmane.

The event was sponsored by GIN MARE by way of delicious cocktails and showcased the delicate, feminine spring/summer 2012 collection from Sarmite with Aiga's dark, ethereal photography which plays with natural light and the movement of the lightweight fabrics.

The new line focuses on formal, classical garment shapes (elegant skirts with above the knee hemlines, chic shirts buttoned up, smart tailored dresses) and transforms them by using light cotton, sheer silk and neutral colours (taupe, cream and greys) for a sensuous, contemporary take on unique style for the modern woman.  One to watch.

Topshop Valencia Mesh Embroidered Pumps

19 September 2011

After a weekend of running around London Fashion Week in heels, I'm in the market for some nice, comfortable flats and these embroidered pumps and patterned loafers from Topshop are cool and pleasingly purse-friendly.

Madison Loafers in a red dalmatian print leather

Even though the above dalmation print is an exciting alternative to the typical animal print, I have a distinct lack of leopard in my wardrobe, so I went for the Madison Loafers in brown leopard print and wore them pretty much every day on holiday along the Italian coast.

Marc by Marc Jacobs Bird Print

13 September 2011

This was my favourite look from yesterday's Marc by Marc Jacobs spring/summer 2012 show at New York Fashion Week.  Even though lots of the womenswear featured colourblock bright colours and zesty tangerine accents, this simple black dress with a pink, red and green bird pattern on it jumped out as my favourite piece for next summer.

The rest of the wearable and commercial collection focused on navy, khaki, cream, orange, oversized shirts, loose silk dresses, big tote bags and casual stripes.  View the full catwalk collection over on Vogue.

Tie Rack: Black Label launch

12 September 2011

On Thursday I attended Tie Rack's launch event of the new Black Label collection at the Ice Bar in Mayfair.

Launching this autumn, Black Label offers a sophisticated collection of men's and women's accessories at high street prices.  Affordable luxury - the two most celebrated words in fashion, surely?  Certainly in my book.

The collection uses the finest fabrics (silk, cashmere, wool and leather) and the classic colour palette (cream, grey, beige and black with the occasional splash of colour) ensures that it is wearable, timeless and sophisticated.

Canestro Cashmere Scarf

There's an attention to detail which is only seen in premium accessories; cashmere-lined leather gloves, Italian leather handbags lined with a patterned silk print and beautiful handmade silk ties from Como in Italy.

I was given this gorgeous grey Weave Knit Scarf worth £90.  The weave is quite open and loose making it look almost sheer, but as it's made from cashmere it's perfect for keeping warm in the upcoming autumn months.

Positano Check Men's Silk Tie/ Perla Men's Cufflinks/ Visconti Men's Glasses

The luxurious accessories are ideal for the global business traveller - I can imagine that the Black Label pieces at Heathrow's Terminal 5 will be snapped up straight away, especially the cashmere blankets (perfect for flights) - and suit both a stylish, formal working wardrobe or a classic, smart casual wardrobe and make great failsafe gifts.

If you like understated elegance at accessible price points, this is for you.

Black Label launches in flagship stores, airports and online in early October 2011

Office Manpower Suede Platforms

9 September 2011

Last night, during a Fashion Night Out blitz in Mayfair and Soho, I bought these bad boys from Office:

Manpower Black Suede Shoes

I'm in need of a few more go-to wardrobe staples, bags and shoes - I've got plenty of standout pieces but I want some more plain and simple basics which go with everything.  These chic, 70s-style platforms have a seriously chunky heel and sturdy platform and make me feel like a sure-footed, stompy horse.  In a good way.  Obviously.

Lanvin AW2011 campaign video

6 September 2011

I LOVE this Lanvin autumn/winter 2011 campaign video! Karen Elson, Raquel Zimmermann, Lowell Tautchin and Milo Spijker's so-bad-they're-good moves are only just upstaged by the super cute Alber Ebaz at the end.

It's great to see a brand so confident in their product offering that they don't feel the need to sell in promotional films, embracing the viral concept by creating a fun, lighthearted video for people to share. Bravo, Lanvin!

L'altro Uomo: The Face Issue

5 September 2011

Last week I was invited to the launch party for the new issue of bi-annual men’s style and culture book, L’Altro Uomo. There was a black tie masquerade ball at the Mayfair Hotel and afterparty at Mahiki:

Created by designer Jerry Osei-Tutu, the book is published in several languages and features a hefty, fresh mix of fashion, design, art, architecture, travel, health and politics. It includes a lot of beautiful photography, illustrations and catwalk shots and my favourite image from The Face Issue is in the art section by a designer/ photographer based in Milan called Grassi Stefano.  I love wine + sailing + original photography = questo e molto bella!

Bridesmaid present: Swarovski Marie Small Crystal Wal Ring

It was my brother's wedding at the weekend *wipes away tears* and it was absolutely beautiful.  Mr Brother and Mrs Brother gave me this sparkling Swarovski ring as a bridesmaid present and I keep looking at it and thinking of the joyous occasion *wipes away tears again*.

It's true the most meaningful gifts are the ones attached to happy memories and this certainly conjures up happy ones!

Marie Small Crystal Wal Ring

'A real treasure for your jewellery box! Beautifully crafted with the exclusive Toupie small cut, the Crystal Wal sparkles in intense blue tones. This delicate design shines like a jewel on your finger and can be stacked with other rings for an on-trend look.'

I might get the Marie Small Crystal Wal Earrings, for when I'm feeling all matchy-matchy as they make a lovely everyday set, I love jewellery and the blue matches my eyes, much like this extremely-Photoshopped model.

Crystal Renn for Vogue Japan

1 September 2011

This great backstage video of Crystal Renn on a Dolce & Gabbana story for Vogue Japan shows the editor-at-large/ fashion director/ super-stylist Anna Dello Russo using sellotape to tape the model's eyes back to give more of a, er, squinty effect.

I love Anna Dello Russo (everyone does, right?  She's consistently high up on my style crush list with her dedication to high fashion and outrageous outfits) and her retro 80s androgynous styling here - AMEN, Boy George! - with a hefty dose of gold metal, jewels, sequins and bling for good measure.

I think that Crystal Renn sometimes looked out of place in a forced "oh look we're celebrating real women by using a plus size model - aren't we good?" way, whereas she's dropped a dress size and looks normal, healthy and fantastic in this shoot.
