Oscar Highlights

The leading ladies of Hollywood were out in force last night, with varying degrees of success.  There were lots of safe dark dresses - I love black, but it needs to be a spectacular dress if you're walking the red carpet; it shouldn't be gothic Victoriana. Or slutty.

Charlize Theron was a surprise disappointment, looking like she let a little niece choose her gown, in a sickly sweet pink, but that aside the current nude trend still proves to be popular, with swathes of girly tulle, a soft feminine palette and beautifully-fitting dresses.  My favourite looks were:

Jennifer Lopez looking grown-up and sculpted in her Armani Privé gown, although - J-Lo at the Oscars?  Please don't say she's trying to dabble in acting again. For everybody's sake.


Cameron Diaz channelled vintage Hollywood glamour in her Oscar de la Renta gown (Oscar at the Oscars? No you didn't) with classic red lips and a swept side parting.


You can always trust Maggie Gyllenhaal to throw a spanner in the works and that she did; the Best Supporting Actress nominee wore a big, summery print on her Dries Van Noten strapless dress and stood out in a sea of romantic hues and plain fabrics. A bold and bizarre choice for the biggest and most glamorous ceremony, but it works.

The show-stealer for me was Demi Moore in a gorgeous Atelier Versace tiered gown in an incredibly flattering blush nude colour which complemented her skin tone perfectly.  She looks youthful, radiant and tasteful.  She's 47 and this is such a beautiful age-appropriate, age-defying, ageless gown.  And the award for Best Dress goes to...
