Precious

Icon's latest release Precious (Based on the novel Push by Sapphire) is out in UK cinemas tomorrow.

I went to the press screening and loved it.  A surprisingly uplifting story about a girl in thoroughly depressing circumstances who focuses on self-improvement and wrestling her hopes and dreams with a tough reality.

The characters are portrayed with raw emotion, especially Gabourey Sidibe who had only done am-dram before, and snaps to Mariah Carey for her fantastic turn as the make up-free guidance social worker trying to deal with Precious's raw and grim situation.

Even though it's early in 2010, I think it's safe to say it'll still be on 'films of 2010' lists by December.

Mo'nique rightly won Best-Supporting Actress at the baftas for her role in Precious. Yes, it was a strangely uplifting film - unusual, disturbing and triggering such empathy with the Daughter and such anger towards the Mother.

Mo'Nique was absolutely stunning in it. Hers was the character which stuck with me the most.
